Raising Wise Children
20 like to use the Know, Love and Serve paradigm to describe a proper relationship with God. You see this concept being described in Deut. 10 and in Proverbs when the Bible talks about the fear of the Lord. Our children must first know the Lord and how much He loves them expressed in what He has done for them. Knowing God rightly, their only reasonable response, of course, is to love the Lord who first loved them. Lastly, if our children love God, then they will serve Him both in reverent worship and in good works that minister to others. Of course, what is true for children is true for anyone who desires to be a child of the living God. When my wife and I got married, we chose Proverbs 3:5-6 as our life verses. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6, NIV). We wanted to live by faith, trusting God and acknowledging Him. We vowed that we would not lean on our own understanding, confident that He would make our paths straight. He has certainly done that.
