Game

Balloon Bop and Pop

You will need 26 large balloons (13 if you want to put two words in each balloon instead of one).

Ahead of time, write on 26 strips of paper, one word for each paper — Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” Slip each strip of paper into one of the 26 balloons or slip 2 strips of paper into one of the 13 balloons, then blow up each balloon.

Play a game (or multiple games) of balloon bop. Hit one balloon around the room to each other, seeing how many times you can bop it before it touches the ground. If that gets to be too easy, throw in a second balloon and a third, etc. Try to keep the balloons up in the air. Have fun! After you’ve played this for a while, it’s time to pop the balloons. Pop each balloon (let the kids do this) and lay out the strips of paper. Read each word (out of order) and see if your children can put the words in the correct order. If need be, have them open up a Bible to the memory passage to help.

Discussion Question

If you had been one of Jesus’ disciples, how do you think you would have responded when Jesus asked, “Where shall we buy bread for all these people?”

Do you think you would have told Jesus to make the people go home to eat OR do you think you would have tried to feed them with your own money?

If you had been one of the 5,000 men on the hill that day, how do you think you would have felt when you watched Jesus thank His Father for 5 small loaves, 2 small fish and then hand out enough food to feed everyone?

Some people believe you have to do good things in order to be loved by Jesus. Is this true?

Allow time for discussion for each question.

When the people in our story asked Jesus what they must do, He made it very clear that they just needed to believe that He is Jesus, God’s Son. We don’t have to do good things in order for Jesus to love us. When we believe that Jesus is our Savior, we want to do things that are right and good, but those things do not make Him love us more.

Memory Work

Level 1

Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” John 6:29

Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35

Level 2

Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”

Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

“Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”

Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

John 6:29-35
