Sing to the tune of “He’s Got the Whole World“
We need Jesus — Light of the World.
We need Jesus — Light of the World.
We need Jesus — Light of the World.
We need Jesus — Light of the World.
Parent: Jesus is…

Gather together in your living room/family room. Turn off all lights (it’s good to do this at night when it’s dark outside), creating a very dark space.
While all are sitting in the dark, have one person (could be grandparent, parent, older sibling) lay out dark objects (plastic cups, toys, balled up blankets, balloons, etc) all across the floor. Feel free to spread these objects to other parts of the house, as well, making sure all rooms are dark. Have each person (or two or three at a time) take a turn attempting to walk across the family room in the dark without stepping on any objects. Encourage them to walk normally, not squinting to see objects and not tiptoeing through. After everyone has had the chance to do this, give one person a flashlight. Allow each person to walk through the room with the flashlight on, shining on the floor, avoiding the objects. After everyone has had the chance to do this, ask:
What was it like walking in the dark? Were you able to avoid the objects we had placed around the room? (Allow for answers) What happened when you had a light to shine in the dark? (Allow for answers)
In today’s story, we learned that Jesus is something very important to us. He shines brightly in the darkness because He is what? (The Light of the World)
Jesus, our Messiah, is the light of the world. May we see Him, believe in Him and worship Him!
How would you feel if you were blind and a stranger — someone you didn’t know — began wiping mud on your eyes?
What do you think it would feel like to have been born blind — to NEVER have been able to see — and then to suddenly be able to SEE?
Do you think the blind man was right when he said this: “Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. If this man were not from God, He could do nothing.”? Why or why not?
Allow time for discussion for each question, then give some clarity.
The blind man was absolutely right. Jesus would not have been able to do what He did had He not been sent by God.
Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said,“Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
“Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”
Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”
Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. John 9:35-38
As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” John 9:1-5
