Game

Guess the Leader

Have everyone sit in a circle. Pick a child to leave the room after you explain the game. Once that child is out of hearing range, pick another person (adult, older sibling or child) who wants to be the leader. Everyone must slyly watch this person and imitate what they do when the first person comes back into the room (cross legs, cross arms, yawn, stick out their tongue, etc.). The person who was out of the room will come back in, stand in the middle of the circle and try to see who is the leader (the one everyone is watching and following). The leader can get bold and make faces, throw their hands in the air, etc. when the person in the middle’s back is turned. Before they have a chance to see who started it, everyone is doing it. Give the person in the middle one, two or three chances to guess who the leader is (based on the size of your family). Then choose a new watcher and a new leader. You can have the leader be the next watcher if he is guessed. After playing several rounds, say:

Good leading and following everyone! In our story, Joshua was chosen by God to lead His people, the Israelites. A good leader always trusts, honors and listens to the LORD. It must have been difficult for Joshua when they came to that dead end. He certainly couldn’t see how they were to get around the rushing waters. But, the LORD had a plan. So, Joshua just had to listen to the LORD and do what He said to do. How do you know what the LORD says to do? (His Word tells us how to live; the Bible is God’s word to us – it tells us what we are to do). Let’s try to always be people who listen to the LORD and do what He says to do.

Discussion Question

What do you think you would have done or thought if you had been an Israelite that day and just come to the rushing Jordan River with the rest of the people?

Memory Work

You will be practicing the three memory items that follow throughout all seven chapters of Word 3, so no need to master them all at once. We recommend working on these with even your youngest children. You’ll be amazed at what they remember!

In each chapter, we will also include chapter-specific memory verses. These are always optional, but provide a great opportunity for older or more advanced children to hide God’s Word in their heart.

  1. The third Word of Grace is: Reverence
  2. Reverence the LORD your God
  3. “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God…” Exodus 20:7a

Challenge Verse

“For the LORD your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The LORD your God did to the Jordan what he had done to the Red Sea when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over. He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the LORD is powerful and so that you might always fear the LORD your God.” Joshua 4:23-24
